Maladaptive Daydreaming

Date

2024 - 25

This collection explores the concept of maladaptive daydreaming, a psychological phenomenon in which many individuals use excessive daydreaming as an escape from stress, boredom or difficult situations. For many, this form of escapism becomes uncontrollable, often leading to the neglect of real-world responsibilities. It is frequently compared to an addition, providing temporary relief from the pain and challenges of daily life. The idea of a "safe zone" is central to this experience: a mental space where nothing can cause harm or emotional distress. In this space, daydremas take on a protective, almost theraputic quality, transforming abstract men tal images into something tangible.

Through the medium of art, these internal experiences are externalised, translating complex emotional states into visual forms that convey both the fantasy and the raw reality of life. The juxtaposition of grunge aesthetic with predominantly white fabrics reflects this contrast. The grunge elements symbolise the darker, more chaotic aspects of daydreaming and emotional pain, while the white fabric represents purity and mental clarity, suggesting the potential for release and renewal. Ultimately, the collection aims to capture the tension between reality and fantasy, offering a visual narrative that resonates with those who experience daydreaming as both a refuge and struggle.
